How Occupy Sacramento Has Affected the Downtown Economy
One of the cities that took part in the Occupy movement was Sacramento, California. On October 6, 2011, a group of 200 citizens started a peaceful protest directly in front of Sacramento City Hall. November 9, 2011 saw the 84th person arrested in Sacramento Occupy. Sacramento Mayor, Kevin Johnson, allowed protesters to camp out in front of City Hall to voice their opinions between certain hours of the day.
On one hand, the protesters scared away potential customers of the surrounding stores, but on the other hand more people joined the movement every day. Since there were people on City Hall property for so long, eventually they shopped at the local businesses in the area for drinks and snacks; they also used the restrooms. In their efforts to move towards economic equality for everybody they helped local businesses.
