Tips for Getting Through the Cold Weather
There are many tips for getting through the cold weather. The most important tip for getting through the winter season is to stay warm. There are also tips for driving and conserving energy that help with safety and keeping the costs down, two very important topics when adapting to cold weather winters.
The human body operates at an optimum core temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the best temperature to maintain chemical reactions that allow the body to function. Even small changes, as much as a few degrees, can interfere with this function. It is extremely important to allow the body to maintain this temperature, or hypothermia may result. Ways to prevent or treat mild hypothermia include putting on extra clothing and layering the body with thermal undershirts, pants and warm wool socks. Caps, earmuffs and scarves help preserve heat in the region of the head and neck. Make sure clothing is dry, and use shelter to resist the elements and cold. Eat or drink hot liquids, sugar and fat to help the body produce heat, and avoid items like coffee, tobacco and alcohol which increase heat loss.
It is best not to drive in snowy conditions, but if necessary, carry chains or use snow tires. Brake gently and go slowly. Use low gears, turn on your lights and watch for icy conditions. Taking these safety precautions can make the cold weather tolerable and even enjoyable, allowing one to appreciate the incredible beauty provided by ice, mist and snow.
